Vocal Coaching

International Vocal Training & Cultural Exchange — Tokyo

Bridging cultures through voice, body and performance

In 2017 and 2019, the Japan Directors Association, a key actor in the development of the performing arts in Japan, hosted two international vocal training programs in Tokyo, dedicated to artistic exploration and intercultural dialogue.

Developed in close collaboration with You Yamagami, these workshops offered Japanese actors a rare opportunity to engage with the innovative vocal methodology of Nadine George, founder of Voice Studio International (London) — a reference in contemporary voice training for actors worldwide.

A Space for Artistic Encounter and Transformation

The core ambition of this initiative was to:

  • Encourage cross-cultural exchange in theatre and vocal practice

  • Deepen artistic dialogue between Japanese and international professionals

  • Expand performers’ expressive and vocal possibilities

Through immersive, practice-based sessions, participants explored the voice not only as a technical tool, but as a pathway to presence, embodiment and artistic freedom.

An Experiential, Body-Centered Approach

Led by Laurent Courtin, the workshops focused on:

  • Releasing the natural voice

  • Developing a deep physical and sensory awareness

  • Connecting breath, body and emotional expression

Innovative exercises drawn from contemporary vocal pedagogy enabled actors to rediscover their vocal potential while strengthening their expressive range and artistic confidence.

A Lasting Impact

These international workshops created a powerful learning environment where tradition met innovation, and where voice became a bridge between cultures. The experience strengthened professional ties and left participants with tools that continue to resonate in their artistic practice.

The voice is far more than a communication tool: it is an inner space, a sensitive territory where body, emotion, energy, and identity meet. Our approach to vocal coaching is rooted in a simple and powerful conviction: to transform one’s voice, one must first reconnect with oneself.

The voice is an intimate space, a place where body, emotion, energy, and identity come together. It reveals much more than words: it tells who we are, what we feel, what we dare to show or hold back. It is not only about improving a technique, but about reconnecting with an authentic, vibrant, fully embodied voice.

Our approach is based on precise physical work: breathing, relaxation, vibrations, sung sound, and text exploration. Every voice is unique, and it is by reconnecting it to its natural anchor—the body—that it can unfold. This method, nourished by my experience at the Voice Studio International with Nadine George, invites you to feel the voice rather than control it, to let it emerge rather than manufacture it. It opens a space where one learns to listen to sensations, release tension, let energy circulate, and welcome every nuance of the voice.

Vocal coaching then becomes a true process of transformation. By working on both the spoken and the sung voice, one discovers a more grounded presence, a more sincere expression, and a deeper confidence. The voice asserts itself, gaining clarity, power, and flexibility. It becomes a vector of inner alignment, a way to express one’s truth without artifice. This approach also has a direct impact on leadership and communication. An embodied voice naturally inspires. It captures attention, creates connection, soothes or mobilizes depending on the intention. It conveys an authority that does not rely on force, but on coherence between what we say and who we are. In a world where communication is constant, the voice becomes an essential tool to assert presence, strengthen charisma, and convey a vision.

The voice cannot be “placed”: it must be lived. It moves through us, is felt, and vibrates throughout the body. It is by fully engaging one’s energy, emotions, and sensitivity that one can truly embody one’s words. This dimension, often absent from our education, allows us to rediscover an organic, free, deeply human voice.

Vocal coaching is for anyone wishing to better understand their voice and better understand themselves: artists, professionals, speakers, managers, or simply individuals seeking authenticity. It is a sensitive exploration, an inner journey that reveals vocal potential, strengthens presence, and enables communication with greater sincerity, power, and pleasure.
